The best-case slide

You joined a three-person startup a month ago as its first employee, and you are sitting in on today's loan pitch as an observer.

In a coworking conference room minutes before a loan pitch, you've just pointed out that slide four's market chart was copied uncredited from a published industry report and shows its best-case projection as today's market size. Wei, a co-founder, built the slide. Giulia, the other co-founder, sits beside him in her wheelchair. You're only attending, but your job depends on this loan.

The scene

Wei: Yes, it's the report's best case labeled our analysis. I'm not touching it now.

Giulia: Lenders in this space quote that number constantly. It's public, not a secret.

Wei: And adding a source after submission gets applications flagged. That's worse for us.

Giulia: We're on in five minutes. Let's just present it as it is.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Wei and Giulia before the lender walks in, and why?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it acceptable to stay quiet about a misleading detail because speaking up would cost you personally?
