Cans after hours
You are a tenant in an apartment building where residents voted for a residents-only door policy after a break-in.
In the recycling room, Alex, the building's well-liked longtime superintendent, has just admitted that she lets a struggling man from the neighborhood in after hours to collect returnable cans. Santiago, a fellow tenant on the building committee, heard it too.
The scene
Alex: He takes cans and leaves. It buys his groceries. Keep it between us.
Santiago: We voted for that rule after the break-in. The board should hear this Thursday.
Alex: They'll make me stop, or worse. I've watched him every single time.
Santiago: Nobody's after your job, Alex. I just need a second tenant. Are you backing me?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Alex and Santiago?
- 2When, if ever, is it acceptable to quietly make an exception to a rule that others agreed on?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
