A reference for Kenji

You and your friend Kenji take the library cart around a hospital's wards twice a week.

Kenji has applied for a porter's post, his first paid job. Three times this month you watched him put down a full shift on the sign-out sheet after leaving an hour early; you never asked him why. Outside the lounge, Rivka, who coordinates the cart rota, catches you both.

The scene

Rivka: Kenji's application needs a peer reference this week. You work beside him. Would you write it?

Kenji: Please say yes. You know how much I want this job.

Rivka: I mainly need to hear he's reliable. Full shifts, on time, that kind of thing.

Kenji: I've never let the cart down. So, will you?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Rivka and Kenji?
  2. 2What do you owe a friend when you are asked to vouch for them?
