A day of rest
You are standing in your apartment hallway with two neighbors during a summer heat wave.
It is the third day of a heat wave, and your building's air conditioning is broken. The city has opened a cooling center two miles away. In the hallway, your neighbor Khalid, 81, has just turned down your offer to drive him there, and Leilani from next door joins you at his door.
The scene
Leilani: It's ninety-five in there, Khalid. People your age land in the hospital.
Khalid: It's my day of rest. I don't ride today. I've kept that seventy years.
Leilani: Then one of us calls emergency services. You've got your phone out. Call.
Khalid: I have water and a fan. Neighbor, will you respect my no?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Khalid and Leilani?
- 2When, if ever, is it right to override an adult's decision for their own safety?
