Scene to read · Ethics, Professionalism
Is there a recording?
You are the senior desk attendant at an apartment building, and you trained Esteban, the new night attendant.
Tonight Esteban admitted that he deleted last Friday's hallway camera footage because it showed him asleep on shift. That footage would also have shown who entered a storage unit, a break-in for which a tenant, Trinh, has received an eviction warning. Esteban supports his family on this job. Trinh comes to the lobby desk while you are both there.
The scene
Trinh: I wasn't even home that night. The hallway camera would prove it. Is there a recording?
Esteban: The system sometimes has gaps. Maybe nothing is there.
Trinh: Twenty-two years I've lived here. You run this desk. Can you check for me?
Esteban: I think my supervisor should answer that one. Not me.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Trinh, and what would you do about what Esteban told you?
- 2When does protecting someone you are responsible for become unfair to someone else?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
