Scene to read · Ethics, Resilience

The match on the laptop

You are a relative who bought your mother and aunt DNA kits as gifts and now holds their results.

In your mother's sitting room, you are discussing the DNA results with your mother, Isolde, 50, and her sister, Ivana, 63. Ivana's results suggest that a stranger is her close relative, though the relationship hasn't been confirmed. The family reunion is this weekend; Isolde wants the family told there, while Ivana wants to decide whether and how to respond before anything is shared.

The scene

Isolde: I'd rather tell everyone ourselves than have them hear it from strangers.

Ivana: I don't even know who this person is. I need some time.

Isolde: I understand, but keeping quiet could look like we deliberately hid something.

Ivana: Please don't share it yet. Let me decide what I'm comfortable doing.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do with the results, and what would you say to Isolde and Ivana?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it right to share a family discovery that affects someone else, even if they ask you to wait?
