Your grandmother's pill organizer doesn't add up
You are visiting your grandmother, who lives alone.
You notice that her weekly pill organizer has Monday's pills still in it on Friday, and some of Thursday's are missing. Later that evening, your mother and your uncle argue on the phone while you listen.
What's said in the scene
Mother: Look at this pillbox.
Mother: She can't manage anymore. She needs to move into a care home.
Uncle: She's fine. Moving her would destroy her. Stop overreacting.
Grandmother: I can hear you both, you know. I'm not a child.
The two questions
- 1How would you approach this situation?
- 2How do you respect someone's independence while also protecting their safety?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
