Scene to read · Ethics, Communication

Next month, quietly

You pay into a household budget that your retired mother runs.

Everyone's share is worked out in a spreadsheet she keeps. In the basement laundry room, Nour, your younger sister, turns her laptop toward you: the edit history shows your older sister, Dorothy, lowering her own entries for three months. Dorothy has just come down with a laundry basket.

The scene

Nour: Three months, Dorothy. About four hundred dollars that Mom covered without knowing.

Dorothy: My hours got cut. I'll put it all back next month, quietly, I swear.

Nour: You said next month in March. Mom should know where her pension's going.

Dorothy: She'd be crushed. Let me fix it first. What are you going to do?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Dorothy and Nour?
  2. 2When is it right to give someone the chance to correct a wrong themselves, and when should others be told?
