Written scenario · Ethics, Empathy

Ten minutes until the truck

You are moving out of the apartment you have shared with your roommate for two years.

You and Bich are carrying boxes down the stairwell when she suddenly admits that all semester she has been buying unlabeled "focus pills" from a stranger online to get through her law school exams. She begs you not to mention it to her parents, who will arrive with the rental truck in ten minutes and take her home for the summer. She seems relieved to have finally told someone. You are worried about what is actually in the pills, and that after today nobody near her will know.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do in the next ten minutes and afterward, and why?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it right to share something a friend told you in confidence?

What raters look for

Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
