The free app's fine print

You are a volunteer member of the board of a community arts center.

The board must decide whether to replace the center's paid ticketing and class-registration system with a free community app. The app is legal and members would accept its terms, but it collects their location, contacts and browsing habits and shares them with advertisers. Anyone declining could not register for classes or get alerts. Kamala says the savings would fund a year of low-cost classes for families who could not otherwise attend. Tomas replies that many of those families would feel they had no real choice, and some could not judge the risks. The board asks for your recommendation: adopt, reject, or set conditions.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you recommend to the board, and why?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it acceptable for an organization to require people to share personal data in exchange for a free service?
