Scene to read · Ethics, Self-awareness

From both of us

You are arriving at your parents' anniversary dinner with your brother, Cristobal, and your sister, Heather.

As you do every year, you chose, bought and wrapped the gift that carries both your name and Cristobal's. Last month he lent you money for a car repair without being asked. In your parents' hallway, before they come out to greet you, he stops you.

The scene

Cristobal: Small favor. Let Mom and Dad think I picked the gift this year.

Heather: You? You didn't even know what it was until the car ride.

Cristobal: Dad thinks I never make an effort. And I did help last month.

Heather: Wow, cashing that in already. Well? Are you going along with it?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Cristobal?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it fine to let someone else take credit for something you did?
