Scene to read · Ethics, Communication

Hay money

You are visiting your grandparents' farm.

You are on the porch at dusk with your aunt Rania and your grandmother, Kavya. Rania, who paid for your first year of college, was laid off in the spring and has been collecting unemployment benefits ever since.

The scene

Rania: Baled for the neighbors all week. Cash, of course. The benefits office doesn't need my summer.

Kavya: Rania. Not everything needs saying out loud.

Rania: What? It's hay money. It stops in September, and so do the benefits.

Kavya: Don't make trouble over this, please. You know who paid for your first year.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say or do, and why?
  2. 2How should gratitude toward someone affect your response when they do something you think is wrong?

What raters look for

Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
Communication
