Booked early, referred this morning
You are the volunteer dispatcher at a rural clinic, and staff have left you to decide who gets the last seat on the van to the city hospital.
A snowstorm is closing the road, and the last van to the city hospital has one seat. Lynette, 82, booked it weeks ago for a same-day treatment. A young mother's referral for the same treatment arrived this morning. Qualified clinic staff confirm both cases are equally urgent. The scheduled van is cleared to travel safely now, but another trip would risk the closing road. The next safe departure may be days away. Whoever stays behind may lose their treatment slot, and you must allocate the seat before departure.
The two questions
- 1Who would you give the seat to, and how would you explain it to the other person?
- 2When, if ever, should circumstances outweigh an earlier booking or a first-come, first-served rule?
