The bracelet at the welcome desk

You are a volunteer at the welcome desk of a hearing clinic.

Isoke, a 74-year-old regular who likes to chat while she waits, shows you a magnetic bracelet she paid a lot for. She says it works so well that she has stopped the daily exercises her therapist gave her, and she asks if you agree it was a smart buy. Then she adds, "Please don't mention this to anyone here. They'll only fuss." The clinic asks volunteers not to pass on what visitors tell them, except for safety worries. You don't know what her therapist knows, and her appointment is in ten minutes.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Isoke, and would you mention the conversation to clinic staff? Why?
  2. 2How do you decide when to share a concern about someone's choices with others, even when they asked you not to?

What raters look for

Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
Empathy
