Scene to read · Ethics, Empathy

Gone again

You live at home with your mother and your older brother.

For a month, food has been disappearing from your family's chest freezer while your mother, Eleni, stretches a tight grocery budget. Last week you saw your older brother, Amir, quietly loading a bag for a laid-off friend whose family is struggling. In the garage, Eleni has the freezer lid open, and Amir is standing next to you.

The scene

Eleni: Two chickens and the soup I made Sunday. Gone again. I'm not imagining this.

Amir: Maybe we ate more than you think, Mom. Long month.

Eleni: I count every dollar in this freezer. Do either of you know anything?

Amir: Mom, please, let it go. Nobody here is going hungry.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you answer your mother, and why?
  2. 2When someone does something generous in a way that is unfair to others, how should the people who know respond?

What raters look for

Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
