Cleaned or not

You volunteer in a hospital rehabilitation gym with a close friend.

Volunteers must wipe down the parallel bars between patients. A minute ago your friend Nizhoni admitted she has been skipping it on busy days and begged you not to tell the staff; one more complaint would end the placement her college application depends on. Sasha, whose wife is next on the bars, walks up to you both.

The scene

Sasha: Quick question before my wife starts. Were these bars cleaned after the last person?

Nizhoni: I'm wiping them down right now, sir. Two minutes.

Sasha: That's not what I asked. You, then. Were they cleaned today or not?

Nizhoni: They'll be spotless before she touches them. Isn't that what matters?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Sasha, and what would you do afterward?
  2. 2What do you owe a friend who asks you to keep quiet about something that could affect other people?
