The spot above her collar
You are waiting in a pharmacy pickup line on your day off, next to your close friend Lata.
It is a quiet Saturday morning. Maha, a stranger in front of you, has a dark, uneven spot on the back of her neck above her collar. After a short chat with Lata, Maha walks to the counter, and Lata turns to you.
The scene
Maha: Do they close at noon on Saturdays? I never remember.
Lata: I think so, but you've got plenty of time.
Lata: Please don't say anything about her neck. Last year a stranger did that to me.
Lata: I felt awful for weeks, and I'd already had it checked.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and why?
- 2When, if ever, is it right to raise a personal concern with a stranger who hasn't asked for your opinion?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
