How we grew up

You are staying for a week at the home of your sister, Tamar, and her husband, Istvan.

Twice this week you have overheard Istvan call his son, who is eleven, worthless and stupid over math homework. Tonight, with the children asleep upstairs, the three of you are sitting on the back porch.

The scene

Istvan: My father tore my homework in half. I just use words.

Tamar: He's failing math. Somebody has to push him. That's how we both grew up.

Istvan: And I turned out fine. Kids today hear nothing but praise.

Tamar: You've been quiet all night. Is something bothering you?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Tamar and Istvan, if anything?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it right to comment on how someone else raises their child?
