Buying from family
You are visiting your uncle with your older brother.
At your uncle Cormac's dining table, your older brother, Gustavo, who sells home security systems on commission, is signing him up for the premium plan. You know the plan carries a steep fee for canceling early, that Cormac lives on a fixed pension, and that Gustavo has not mentioned the fee.
The scene
Gustavo: Cameras, sensors, round-the-clock monitoring. After that break-in nearby, you'll sleep better.
Cormac: It's a lot each month. But I'd rather buy from family than a stranger.
Gustavo: Three-year term, sign here. Honestly, it's the one I'd pick for you.
Cormac: Before I sign. You're the careful one. Does this sound like a good deal?
The two questions
- 1How would you answer Cormac, with Gustavo sitting beside him?
- 2When is staying silent as dishonest as saying something untrue?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
