Seven hours

You are the newest member of a three-person landscaping crew.

Rain stopped today's job after five hours of work and an hour of waiting; loading out in the downpour took another hour, which company policy says is not billed to clients. The company also paid last month's overtime two weeks late. In the equipment yard, the crew lead, Sal, who covered for you when you damaged a mower, fills in the time sheet beside your coworker Bree.

What's said in the scene

Sal: I'm writing seven. That last hour hauling gear in the rain was work, whatever the office says.

Bree: My rent bounced when they paid us late. I'm signing.

Sal: You're next. I kept quiet about that mower for you.

Bree: It's one hour, and we earned it. Aren't you signing?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do?
  2. 2Does being treated unfairly yourself change what you owe to other people? Explain.
