Scene to read · Ethics, Empathy

Reason for the exception

You take the minutes for your co-housing community's monthly meetings.

The treasurer, Edwin, has approved a three-month pause on shared-meal fees for Jimena's household, to be noted in tonight's minutes. The community's rule is that every fee exception is recorded with its reason, because vague entries once caused a bitter split. After dinner in the common dining hall, both come over to you.

The scene

Jimena: I lost my job. I'd rather forty households not read that.

Edwin: I'm sorry, truly. But we write down reasons so nobody wonders who's getting favors.

Jimena: Couldn't it just say hardship? That's true, and it's enough.

Edwin: Last time it said that, the rumors were worse. You hold the pen.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you write in the minutes, and what would you say to Jimena and Edwin?
  2. 2When should a group's need for transparency give way to one member's privacy?

What raters look for
