Turn off the alarms

You volunteer at a public library's tech help desk.

Anjana, 79, has brought in the tablet her son set up for her and asks you to turn off its daily medication reminders. Lina, a fellow volunteer, is at the desk beside you.

The scene

Anjana: Please turn off these alarms. I stopped one medicine. My son must not know.

Lina: It's your tablet, Anjana. We fix settings, we don't ask about health.

Anjana: It made me dizzy every day. My son worries, he checks everything. You will do it?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Anjana?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it right to act on a concern for someone who has not asked for your help?

What raters look for

Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
