Reminders only
You run the signup form for a free online coding workshop series you organize with two others.
At your coworking desk, co-organizers Manu and Ayana have a sponsor's offer open: a full year of funding, including a first small stipend for each organizer, if you share attendees' email addresses. The form told attendees their emails would be used for session reminders only.
The scene
Ayana: They'll fund the whole year if we send the list by five.
Manu: The form said reminders only. But without this money, there's nothing to remind anyone about.
Ayana: It's one sponsor and one newsletter. People can unsubscribe.
Manu: You hold the export. Are you sending it?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and why?
- 2When, if ever, is it acceptable to use people's information in a way they were not told about?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
