Off the returns pile

You are visiting family for the weekend.

Last weekend your older brother, Oscar, spent two days helping you move. During a family visit, you are sorting screws at one end of the garage workbench while he shows your aunt Paloma a new power drill from the hardware store where he works. Staff caught taking stock there are fired.

The scene

Paloma: That's a two-hundred-dollar drill. They pay you that well now?

Oscar: It was free. Fell off the returns pile and into my bag.

Paloma: Good for you. Stores write off more than that daily.

Oscar: Yeah. Doesn't feel great, honestly. Hey, you heard nothing, okay? After last weekend, you owe me.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Oscar, now or later?
  2. 2Does owing someone a favor change what you should be willing to say to them? Why or why not?
