Scene to read · Ethics, Professionalism

The extra hundred forty

You are the volunteer secretary of a neighborhood book co-op and you keep the minutes at each monthly session.

The meeting has ended and the room at the library is nearly empty. Sylvan, the co-op chair, and Tadeo, the member who audits the books, are still at the table with you. Rounding up dues over the year has left $140 that no line in the records explains.

The scene

Sylvan: That extra money's a gift. Let's throw everyone a surprise spring party.

Tadeo: It's members' money. Shouldn't it be recorded and put to a vote?

Sylvan: A vote ruins the surprise. Nobody will mind, and you know it.

Tadeo: It should be in the minutes. You're secretary, so what goes down?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do about the surplus and the minutes, and what would you say to Sylvan and Tadeo?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you had to decide how openly to handle something that others would have preferred to keep quiet.
