Scene to read · Ethics, Professionalism

Sixty short

You count and split the weekly tip pool at a neighborhood café.

Checking the ledger in the back office, you find that last week you shorted Istvan, the dishwasher, by sixty dollars. You have just told Hassan, the shift lead who sets your hours, when Istvan comes in for this week's envelope.

The scene

Hassan: Slip sixty into his envelope this week and say nothing. One recount and everyone wants six months checked.

Istvan: Evening. Last week felt light. Slow week, I guess?

Hassan: Up and down, like always. Your envelope's nearly ready.

Istvan: No rush. You count them, right? Did mine look normal to you?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you answer Istvan, and what would you do about the mistake?
  2. 2Is quietly fixing a mistake the same as owning it? Explain.
