Last bus before the pharmacist
You are a part-time student cashier in your first month at a neighborhood pharmacy.
It is a quiet weeknight and you are alone at the front register. Igor, a man around 34, asks for a box of sterile injection supplies kept behind the counter. Store policy says the pharmacist must approve each of these sales. She is on a twenty-minute break at the back, and a coworker says she often turns her phone off. No manager is on shift. Igor, uneasy, says he injects his prescribed medicine every night, used his last clean supply this morning, and his last bus to his night shift leaves in ten minutes. Missing the shift could cost him the job, and no other pharmacy nearby is open.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Igor right now, and what would you do?
- 2How do you decide when to follow a rule you didn't write, even when it seems to be getting in the way of someone you are trying to help?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
