Scene to read · Ethics, Empathy

Twice this month

You are visiting your grandmother at her house for the week.

Ten minutes ago your grandmother Noa, 82, told you she has fallen on her stairs twice this month and begged you not to tell anyone. Your cousin Aleksander, who looks in on her every day, has said another fall means she cannot go on living alone. Now he joins you both at the bottom of the staircase.

The scene

Aleksander: Grandma, you look tired. Are these stairs still okay for you?

Noa: I'm fine. Forty years I've climbed them. I'm not leaving this house.

Aleksander: I just don't want a phone call from the hospital one night. You've been here all week. Has everything really been okay?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you answer Aleksander, and why?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it right to share something a person asked you to keep private in order to protect them?

What raters look for
