Scene to read · Ethics, Empathy

Could've been anyone

You work evenings behind the counter at a neighborhood pharmacy.

Just after closing, your coworker Paloma quietly admits she handed two customers the wrong orders this week; both were returned unopened. She is exhausted from caring for her sick father, already has one warning on file, and begs you to keep it quiet. Then Irfan, the store manager, walks over.

The scene

Irfan: Two wrong bags went out this week. Either of you know how that happened?

Paloma: It's been so busy, Irfan. Honestly, it could've been anyone on the counter.

Irfan: If I can't find the cause, I'm writing up the whole counter team.

Paloma: We'd tell you if we knew. Wouldn't we?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Irfan and to Paloma?
  2. 2Describe a time someone asked you to keep quiet about a mistake that was not yours. What did you do?
