Scene to read · Ethics, Professionalism
A small fee?
You sell furniture on commission at a store with its own financing desk.
Your manager, Guadalupe, tells staff to pitch the "zero interest for a year" plan and let the written agreement cover the rest; you are two sales short of keeping your position this month. The agreement says that if any balance remains after twelve months, all the interest from day one is charged. Mateo, 63, a landscaper, is at the financing desk with you both.
The scene
Mateo: Zero interest for a year. If I finish a month late, what, a small fee?
Guadalupe: Pay it off in twelve months and there's no interest at all.
Mateo: My work's seasonal, so I might cut it close.
Guadalupe: Most customers do fine, Mateo. It's all in the agreement. Our associate will get you signed.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Mateo, and why?
- 2What is the difference, if any, between lying to someone and leaving out something they would want to know?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Professionalism
