Scene to read · Professionalism, Empathy
The coordinator's hat
You are a volunteer at a community center and a friend of both Yehuda and Yesenia.
Outside a meeting room, you find Yehuda, the volunteer coordinator, and Yesenia, a longtime volunteer, after tonight's planning meeting. Yehuda declined Yesenia's food drive idea in front of the group. Both friends ask you to weigh in.
The scene
Yesenia: Yehuda, you rejected my idea publicly. Friends don't do that.
Yehuda: I was speaking as coordinator, not your friend. Our schedule's full.
Yesenia: You could have told me privately first. Everyone saw; it felt personal.
Yehuda: Maybe, but I can't favor friends in meetings. What do you think?
The two questions
- 1What would you say or do in this moment, and why?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to separate a friendship from a role or responsibility. How did you handle it?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
