Scene to read · Resilience, Empathy
Twelve waiting for the quiz
You are an activities assistant at a care home.
Mr. Abel, a resident you sat with most afternoons, died this morning, and your shift runs until six. In the staff corridor, your coworker Maryam finds you. Malia, 84, a resident, has come looking for you as well.
The scene
Maryam: I saw your face at lunch. It gets easier. You learn to keep moving.
Malia: There you are! Twelve of us are waiting for the quiz.
Maryam: I can ask to send you home. Then there's no quiz today.
Malia: It's the best part of Tuesday, and Abel never missed one. Coming?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Maryam and Malia?
- 2How do you look after yourself while people are still depending on you?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
