Scene to read · Resilience, Communication
Pride never paid a bill
You have been out of work for three months and share a home with your partner, Min-ji.
You can cover one more month of rent, and you have two interviews next week. Your parents are retired on a fixed income, and you have never asked them for money. At the kitchen table, covered in bills, Min-ji says it is time to ask them, while your father, Albert, is visiting.
The scene
Min-ji: In my family you'd have asked in week two. No shame in it.
Albert: We'd have to dip into the roof money, but we'd write the check tonight.
Min-ji: And if both interviews fall through, we're short on rent. I'm scared.
Albert: Your mother says pride never paid a bill. It's your call, kid. I won't push.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Min-ji and Albert?
- 2What makes it hard to accept help, and how do you know when you should?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
