Scene to read · Resilience, Problem solving
Brick or unlocked door
You are a bike courier who has to fill in the building's incident form about your stolen bike.
Your work bike is gone from the building's storage room, an hour before your shift. The manager says insurance will replace it only if your form states how the thief got in, and 'unknown' means no payout. Your roommate, Chiamaka, borrowed your key last night. Dylan, a neighbor, admits he often props the door with a brick for deliveries.
The scene
Chiamaka: I locked it at ten. I'm almost sure. His brick was there.
Dylan: I pulled that brick before bed. I always do, every night.
Chiamaka: If you write 'unlocked,' it's my fault and I pay for it.
Dylan: And if you write 'propped,' the manager fines me. Neither of us saw it.
The two questions
- 1What would you write on the form, and what would you say to Chiamaka and Dylan?
- 2When something goes wrong and you cannot tell whose fault it is, how do you decide what to do next?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
