Scene to read · Resilience, Empathy
Save it for the toast
You have just arrived at your parents' house for a party in your honor.
The result letter is in your bag: you failed your professional licensing exam for the third time. Your father is out collecting relatives, and in the kitchen a cake sits on the counter because your mother, Lusia, assumed you passed. Your aunt Rocio, the only person you have told, catches you first, just before Lusia comes in.
The scene
Rocio: She's cooked for two days, and thirty people are coming. Tell her tomorrow, please.
Lusia: There you are! Don't show me the letter. Save it for my toast.
Rocio: A toast, Lusia? Maybe keep tonight simple.
Lusia: Simple? Everyone's here in an hour. Come, help me with the candles.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to your mother and your aunt, and when?
- 2What helps a person be open about a failure with the people who were counting on them?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
