I won't hold you to it

You work full-time and are also a live-in caregiver.

Since his stroke a year ago, you have lived with Oluwaseyi, your grandfather, cooking, lifting and answering his night bell around your shifts; you gave him your word he would never be moved to a nursing residence. Jun-ho, your brother, a ship's engineer home on leave, has stopped you in the bedroom doorway. Oluwaseyi, 89, is awake, propped on his pillows.

The scene

Jun-ho: You nodded off driving last week. Maple Court has an opening. It's time.

Oluwaseyi: I can hear you both. I won't hold you to your word.

Jun-ho: Thank you. That's all anyone needed to hear.

Oluwaseyi: I didn't say I want to go, Jun-ho. I'd hate it. But it's your life. Choose.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you answer your grandfather?
  2. 2How do you know when caring for yourself has to come before a duty to someone you love?
