One more complaint about parking

You are a volunteer at a hospital feedback desk, collecting visitors' comments about a recent parking-fee change.

The hospital recently changed its parking fees, and you did not decide it. The administration asked volunteers to record every comment. For several hours, visitors have criticized the change, some sharply, and you are tired. The next visitor, already irritated, steps up and begins to speak. You could keep listening and recording, explain the reasons you know for the policy, or find another way to handle the conversation.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do as this visitor begins to speak, and why?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you kept your composure while absorbing criticism or frustration that was not really yours. What helped you carry on, and what did you learn?

What raters look for

Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
