Scene to read · Resilience, Empathy
One thing left to try
You are at a phone repair shop with your brother, holding your sister's phone.
Your sister Mere's account was locked last week, taking five years of photos, including the last ones of your late father. She left her phone with you and went to her shift, where she cannot take calls, saying she could not bear another letdown. At the repair shop counter are your brother Ariki and the technician, Hui.
The scene
Hui: One recovery left. If it fails, it wipes the few photos still on here.
Ariki: She said no more letdowns. Keep what's left. I warned her for years.
Hui: The request expires at midnight. I close in ten, and I need a yes.
Ariki: She left the phone with you, not me. So what do we do?
The two questions
- 1What would you tell Hui, and what would you say to Ariki?
- 2When someone is facing a loss, is it kinder to protect them from false hope or to let them hope?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
