Scene to read · Resilience, Problem solving

Dry each one

You are standing in your flooded basement with your partner and your mother.

A burst pipe soaked the boxes of childhood things you had kept: photographs, school reports, drawings. The rented dumpster outside is collected tomorrow morning. Your partner, Malcolm, and your mother, Huda, have each picked up a wet box.

The scene

Malcolm: It already smells of mold. Everything goes in the dumpster today.

Huda: These are your baby pictures. Give me a week. I'll dry each one.

Malcolm: A week of wet paper down here, and the walls go too.

Huda: Some things you can't buy again. They're yours. What do you want?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you decide, and what would you say to Malcolm and Huda?
  2. 2After a loss, how do you decide what is worth the effort of saving and what to let go?
