Scene to read · Resilience, Equity

The smaller shaded plot

You are a plot-holder in a shared community garden, and your large plot was just reassigned under a new rule.

Behind a row of apartments, Joris, a garden committee member, and Josue, a long-time neighbor, stand at the garden's edge. The new rule gives larger plots to households with no other outdoor space. You have worked your old plot for two seasons, and your new plot is half the size and shaded. You may accept it or file a formal appeal.

The scene

Joris: You built that soil up. The rule puts households without yards first.

Josue: Seems fair, but two seasons of compost is hard to leave.

Joris: Your new plot is smaller and shaded, but an appeal is allowed.

Josue: An appeal could take space from a family who needs it.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do in this situation, and why?
  2. 2Tell us about a time a rule or decision changed something you had worked hard on. How did you respond?

What raters look for

Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
