Scene to read · Resilience, Communication

Your Wednesday slot

You are the newest volunteer in a hospital gift shop, unpacking stock during your weekly Wednesday shift.

In the hospital gift shop stockroom, Hakim, the volunteer coordinator, is finishing his shift before leaving on a month of leave tomorrow. Hazel, a longtime volunteer, shelves greeting cards nearby. You started a month ago and have heard of no problems. Next week's schedule goes out tonight.

The scene

Hakim: Your Wednesday slot goes to someone else starting next week, I'm afraid.

Hazel: Oh. I didn't know the schedule was changing again. Is that final?

Hakim: It's final once I send it tonight. I can't discuss reasons today.

Hazel: Then nobody can appeal before you leave. That doesn't seem fair to anyone.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say or do next, and why?
  2. 2Describe a time you received news that felt unfair without being given the full reason. How did you respond, and what did you learn?
