Scene to read · Resilience, Empathy
Everything happens for a reason
You lost your job three weeks ago and share an apartment with two roommates.
It is late evening in the living room, and you have just said that today's interview did not lead to a call back. Your roommates Imani and Daoud are on the couch. Imani has offered the same comfort several times this week, and each time it has stung; Daoud has asked you privately to let it go, because she means well.
The scene
Imani: No call back? Everything happens for a reason. Something better's coming, I can feel it.
Daoud: You do always say that, Imani.
Imani: Because it got me through losing the salon. You've gone quiet. Did I say something wrong?
Daoud: No, you're fine. It's just been a long day. Right?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Imani, if anything, and why?
- 2When someone's attempt to comfort you does not help, is it better to tell them or to accept the intention?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
