Scene to read · Resilience, Ethics

Ready to apologize?

You live on a houseboat at a small marina.

Last month the dock manager, Jakub, blamed you for eighty dollars missing from the shared honor box for ice and pump-outs, and took it from your slip deposit. Minutes ago your neighbor Cesar, who is months behind on mooring fees and could lose his slip, quietly admitted that he took it. Jakub walks up to you both by the cooler.

The scene

Jakub: Dock meeting's tonight. Folks want this settled. Ready to apologize to them?

Cesar: Maybe just let it rest, Jakub. The money's been covered. Why drag it out?

Jakub: Because a box that runs on trust needs an answer. One sentence, that's all.

Cesar: It's an apology, not a confession. Please. Then it's over for everybody.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Jakub, and to Cesar?
  2. 2How much should a person be willing to absorb to protect someone else from the consequences of what they did?
