Scene to read · Resilience, Empathy

The last big kitchen

You are the adult child of Jareth and Jaromir, visiting the family home before it sells.

Your parents, Jareth and Jaromir, are downsizing, and half-packed boxes fill the empty kitchen where every holiday dinner was held. Jareth is sad to leave it. Jaromir wants you to take over hosting in your smaller home.

The scene

Jareth: Thirty years of holidays in this kitchen. I can't picture them anywhere else.

Jaromir: It's a new chapter, Jareth. Our child has a home and energy for it.

Jareth: A smaller table, though. Some family might feel there's no room for them.

Jaromir: We'd help however we can. So what do you say, will you host?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to your parents?
  2. 2How do you decide when to carry a tradition forward, change it, or let it end?

What raters look for

Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
