Scene to read · Resilience, Self-awareness
Start again tonight
You are a researcher in a university lab.
An incubator failed overnight and destroyed three months of your cell cultures. The grant report that depends on them is due in ten weeks. In the incubator room, the head of the lab, Babajide, and your colleague Arjun are standing with you.
The scene
Babajide: I'm so sorry. But start new cultures tonight and we still make the report.
Arjun: You've been up since five and three months just died. Go home.
Babajide: A day's delay costs a week at the other end. I'll stay and help.
Arjun: Tired hands spoil cultures. I'd rather lose a week than another three months.
The two questions
- 1What would you do tonight, and why?
- 2What helps you start again after losing work you had put a great deal into?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
