Scene to read · Resilience, Professionalism
Sent to the wrong building
You volunteer as a greeter who gives directions at a hospital's main entrance.
Last week you sent a family to the wrong building; they missed the start of an appointment and complained. Hospital policy takes a volunteer off solo desk duty after a directions complaint until they retrain, and the next session is two months away. In the volunteer office, the coordinator, Patrick, and a fellow volunteer, Geeta, are with you.
The scene
Patrick: The records office is three weeks behind and needs you. Or I approve supervised shadowing.
Geeta: Sit beside me, then. Everyone sends someone wrong once. I did.
Patrick: Shadowing puts you back out front, where that family comes in every Tuesday.
Geeta: And filing means two months forgetting the map. Honestly, which do you want?
The two questions
- 1Which would you choose, and what would you say to Patrick?
- 2After a mistake, how do you tell the difference between stepping back responsibly and avoiding something that scares you?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
