Scene to read · Resilience, Communication

Until spring

You work night shifts and sleep during the day.

You sleep from eight in the morning. The house next door, owned by Shirin, 75, is being rebuilt so that she can live on one floor, and the work will take six months. In her front yard, beside the scaffolding, Shirin and her builder, Clara, stop you on your way home.

The scene

Shirin: I'm so sorry about the noise, dear. Can you bear with us until spring?

Clara: Honestly, the loud part hasn't started. Concrete cutting begins Monday.

Shirin: I can't manage my stairs anymore. I don't know what else to do.

Clara: We could start at ten instead of seven. It adds a month, though.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Shirin and Clara?
  2. 2How do you decide how much of a burden to put up with for someone else's sake before you ask for a change?

What raters look for
