Sixth week on the couch

You have been sleeping on a friend's couch for six weeks while you look for an apartment.

Your third application was turned down this morning, and the next places you can afford open in about a month. Jian, the friend whose couch it is, tells you to stay as long as you need. He means it, and you once put him up for a whole summer when he was between jobs. But his partner now works from the bedroom, the household's routines have bent around you, and conversations stop when you walk in. Your other option is a weekly-rate motel room that would use up most of the deposit you have saved.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Jian?
  2. 2How do you keep going after repeated rejections without leaning too heavily on the people who are helping you?

What raters look for

Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
