Scene to read · Self-awareness, Empathy
Who really does the remembering?
You are house-sitting for your aunt and uncle, and family members often ask you to settle their disagreements.
You are in the kitchen of your aunt and uncle's home while house-sitting. Heloise, your aunt, has just finished a long list of upcoming birthdays and appointments. Hendrik, your uncle, is beside her. Both turn to you, and you have a habit of quietly doing everything yourself.
The scene
Heloise: I remember every birthday, card and appointment here, and nobody even notices.
Hendrik: I'd gladly help if you asked, Heloise. I can't read your mind.
Heloise: Asking adds work, Hendrik. You'd see by looking. Tell him he's wrong.
Hendrik: Be honest. You do this stuff all the time too. Who's right?
The two questions
- 1What would you say or do in this moment, and why?
- 2Tell us about a time you took on tasks quietly for others without being asked. What did you learn about yourself from it?
What raters look for
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
