Scene to read · Self-awareness, Professionalism

The neat one

You have always thought of yourself as the neat one at home.

Last week you joked that Naveen and Jana, the two people you live with, were the messy ones. Tonight they have walked you to the bathroom doorway, where a chart of check marks has hung for eight weeks. You scrub pots and wipe counters most days, which the chart never listed.

The scene

Jana: You called us the messy ones. Eight weeks, two checks in your bathroom column.

Naveen: To be fair, you wash everyone's dishes daily. The chart doesn't count that.

Jana: Nobody asked for the dishes. We agreed on the chart.

Naveen: So do we change the chart, or do you owe us six bathrooms?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Jana and Naveen?
  2. 2How do you find out whether the way you see yourself matches the way others experience you?
